Install and Update Workshop Mods on a DayZ Server

Download DayZ mods, copy signing keys, configure -mod, preserve dependency order and update without damaging persistence.

A DayZ mod must exist on the server, be loaded through -mod, and be signed by a key the server accepts. Clients need the same version and order. Adding only a Workshop ID to a download script is therefore not enough.

Prepare the list and backup

Read each mod page for dependencies, order, stable/experimental support, mission edits and removal steps. Record the numeric Workshop URL ID and put required frameworks before their dependants.

Schedule downtime, stop gracefully, and back up mpmissions, profiles, the -storage root, serverDZ.cfg, launch parameters, keys, and the ordered mod list. A mod that changes the economy or persistent objects may make a configuration-only rollback incomplete.

Download, mount and load mods

DayZ Workshop content uses game AppID 221100. Bohemia's Linux guide uses workshop_download_item 221100 MOD_ID in SteamCMD. Download every dependency, then expose its folder to the server directory through a copy, symbolic link or hosting-panel mechanism.

A distributed mod normally contains Addons, Keys, meta.cpp and sometimes mod.cpp. Copy public .bikey files from each mod's Keys into the server keys directory. Load client mods in order, for example -mod=@Framework;@ModA;@ModB. Reserve -serverMod for software explicitly described as server-only and not sent to clients.

Keep verifySignatures=2 on a public server. Disabling signature checks to bypass an error hides a missing key or altered package and weakens security.

Validate and update

Start with a small set, read the RPT, and confirm that no PBO, script or dependency is missing. Join through the DayZ launcher, which should show the exact list. Test the feature, a restart and persistence before adding another batch.

For updates: announce downtime, back up, stop, download the server and Workshop items, synchronize folders and keys, then start. Never replace files under a live process. The official Windows Server_manager.ps1 can update server and mods, but check its presence and version in the installed build.

Troubleshoot a modded connection

A signature error usually means a missing .bikey, a different PBO or a stale client. An “equal mod” error means versions or lists differ. Compare IDs, sizes, timestamps and order; do not change ports. If the process crashes, remove the latest batch from a copy and read the first RPT error.

For visibility issues, use the DayZ server-not-showing guide. Compare DayZ hosts by Workshop and key management.
