Optimize Hytale Server RAM, Java 25 and View Distance
Install Java 25, cap heap safely, tune view distance and measure CPU, memory and garbage collection on a Hytale server.
The Hytale server requires Java 25 and can run on a device with at least 4 GB of memory, but that minimum is not a promise for every world. The official manual separates two drivers: players and entities primarily load CPU, while large loaded areas and view distance primarily consume RAM.
Verify Java and the official launcher
Use a 64-bit Java 25 runtime for x64 or arm64. The manual recommends Adoptium. Verify the binary used by the service:
java --version
It must report Java 25. With several Java installs, an interactive shell may be correct while the panel or service starts an older binary, so inspect the script path.
Hytale ships a trained AOT cache to reduce startup warm-up:
java -XX:AOTCache=HytaleServer.aot -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zip
Keep the JAR, HytaleServer.aot and Assets.zip from one release. Replace an old cache with the new release's file rather than reusing it blindly.
Set -Xmx without starving the host
With official wrapper scripts, put JVM arguments in jvm.options, one per line:
-Xms2G
-Xmx4G
-XX:+UseG1GC
This shows the format, not a universal allocation. -Xmx caps Java heap; leave memory for the OS, native buffers, cache and backups. The manual notes that required memory is hard to infer from allocation alone and that pressure often appears as extra CPU time spent in garbage collection.
Do not automatically set -Xms equal to -Xmx, or paste a long “magic flags” list created for another Java version. Start simple, observe and change one variable per test.
Limit view distance
The Hytale manual calls view distance the main RAM driver and recommends a maximum of 12 chunks, or 384 blocks. This is already broad; Hypixel's comparison notes that it covers roughly the block radius of 24 Minecraft chunks.

Comparable measurements
- •Same Hytale build, Java, world and mod list in both tests.
- •Same number of players and exploration route.
- •Resident memory and heap, not only configured Xmx.
- •Per-core CPU and garbage-collection spike frequency.
- •Startup, save, teleport and world-load duration.
- •Logs free of OutOfMemoryError and repeating plugin errors.
- •A verified backup before every Java or heap change.
For deeper observability, the manual references an Apex Prometheus exporter and Nitrado PerformanceSaver plugin. Check versions and permissions before installing. The Hytale server setup guide covers Java, assets and first launch.
