How to Make a Necesse Dedicated Server and Invite Friends
Install the Necesse server, choose a world, open the port and configure player access.
Necesse offers two ways to play together. In-game hosting works while the owner is present; a dedicated server keeps the world available independently. The official wiki explains both options and the setup process.
Install and launch a dedicated world
- Get the server files through Steam or the official download page. Use a version matching the clients that will join.
- Run the server launcher; on Windows, the wiki identifies
StartServer.bat. On first launch, enter a world name and answer the configuration prompts. - Stop the server before editing its settings. Documented options include the port, player slots, password, owner and
pausewhenempty. - Allow the configured port through the firewall and, for home hosting, forward it on your router. The wiki's default is 14159. Test from outside your network rather than relying only on an automated port checker.
Players select Multiplayer > Add Server in Necesse and enter the public server address and port. A local 192.168.x.x address only works for devices on the same network.
Keep the world online without losing progress
Before updating or moving hosts, stop the server and copy its save directory and settings. Test that the copy loads before removing the original. If friends can no longer join, compare client/server versions first, then inspect the port, firewall and address they entered.
Self-hosting requires an available machine and connection during play. To avoid that maintenance, see listed Necesse hosting offers and ask whether the provider lets you export your world.
