How to Make a Sons of the Forest Server with SteamCMD

Install the Sons of the Forest dedicated server, open its three UDP ports, secure dedicatedserver.cfg and validate persistence.

The Sons of the Forest dedicated server installs anonymously through SteamCMD app 2465200. It uses three UDP ports, strict JSON configuration and a startup network self-test. The most dangerous setting is SaveMode: New: while active, every restart creates and overwrites the selected save slot. Use Continue for a persistent world.

Prepare the installation

This guide targets the Windows dedicated server documented by Endnight. Create an unprivileged service account, separate SteamCMD and server directories, and a stable LAN address. For an existing instance, stop and copy its user-data directory, especially Saves, dedicatedserver.cfg and ownerswhitelist.txt.

The default user-data path is:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\LocalLow\Endnight\SonsOfTheForestDS

Override it with -userdatapath "D:\SOTF-data" if needed. Back up this path, not only binaries installed by SteamCMD.

Install and perform the first launch

1

Install SteamCMD

Download SteamCMD from Valve, extract and run it once. Keep game server files elsewhere so tool and data are not confused during updates.
2

Download app 2465200

Log in anonymously and validate files. No game-owning Steam account is required for this server download.
steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir "C:\sons-dedicated" +login anonymous +app_update 2465200 validate +quit
3

Run StartSOTFDedicated.bat

First launch creates default files in user data. It may stop because configuration or owner list was absent; read the message, stop and edit the generated files.
4

Configure a persistent world

Edit dedicatedserver.cfg as valid JSON. Set name, password, slot and especially SaveMode: Continue. Start from default gameplay settings before custom mode.
5

Add owners

Put one SteamID64 per line in ownerswhitelist.txt. Owners receive the highest in-game administration access, so add trusted people only.

Configure dedicatedserver.cfg

Adapt this minimal example:

{
  "IpAddress": "0.0.0.0",
  "GamePort": 8766,
  "QueryPort": 27016,
  "BlobSyncPort": 9700,
  "ServerName": "My Sons of the Forest server",
  "MaxPlayers": 8,
  "Password": "CHANGE_ME",
  "LanOnly": false,
  "SaveSlot": 1,
  "SaveMode": "Continue",
  "GameMode": "Normal",
  "SaveInterval": 600,
  "LogFilesEnabled": true,
  "SkipNetworkAccessibilityTest": false
}

JSON permits no comments or comma after the last field. Strings stay quoted; numbers and booleans do not. The server refuses invalid JSON and normally reports the offending setting.

Open ports and pass the self-test

PortProtocolPurpose
8766UDPGamePort
27016UDPQueryPort and Steam discovery
9700UDPBlobSyncPort for initialisation and data exchange

Allow all three over UDP in Windows Firewall and forward them to the host when behind a router. On startup, self-test checks configuration, public IPv4 and reachability. Fix its reported cause before enabling SkipNetworkAccessibilityTest.

That option may be needed when a router lacks NAT loopback/hairpin support, but bypassing does not open a port. Test immediately from an external network. For a private LAN, enable LanOnly and retain local firewall rules.

Validate, back up and update

Before inviting the group

  • •Self-test passes or bypass is justified by a successful external test.
  • •The correct name appears in the dedicated browser.
  • •An external player joins and an owner opens admin controls.
  • •SaveMode remains Continue after world creation.
  • •A clean stop and restart returns the same world and players.
  • •The complete user-data folder is backed up off-host.
  • •File logs are enabled during diagnosis and monitored.

Before updating, stop and archive user data. Run the same SteamCMD command, start privately and verify the save. Direct edits to StartSOTFDedicated.bat may be replaced by validation; keep custom arguments in a separate wrapper.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Sons of the Forest server app ID?
The SteamCMD dedicated server app ID is 2465200 and accepts anonymous login for installation and updates.
Why is my world recreated on every launch?
Check SaveMode. New creates a new world and overwrites the slot on every start; use Continue to load or create the selected SaveSlot once.
Which ports must be opened?
Defaults are 8766, 27016 and 9700, all UDP. If you change them in JSON, update firewall and forwarding to the same values.
Can I skip the network test?
Only after diagnosis, such as a router without NAT loopback. SkipNetworkAccessibilityTest hides the test but fixes neither firewall nor forwarding; validate with a player on another network.
