Valheim crossplay server: setup and joining

Enable Valheim crossplay, find the join code and separate PlayFab connection problems from ports, versions and mod compatibility.

A Valheim server needs the crossplay backend to bring players from different platforms together. A reachable IP address alone will not let a non-Steam client join a Steam-only server. Start with an unmodded world and current game versions.

Enable the correct server backend

Stop the server cleanly and back up its world. Enable Crossplay in your hosting panel's startup settings. On a self-managed installation, add -crossplay to the existing launch command while keeping the world name and save directory unchanged.

Start the server and wait for its online connection to complete in the logs. Keep the port assigned by your provider; it may differ from the default. The public server name, world password and join code serve different purposes.

Test every intended platform

Get the current join code from the server interface or a connected player's pause menu. Add the server through Join Game using that code, then enter the password when prompted. Have someone from each intended platform connect before opening the world to the group.

The PlayFab crossplay backend uses a relay. It does not require the same home-router port forwarding as the Steam backend, and local or loopback addresses cannot be used to join it. For rented hosting, use the connection details shown in the panel.

Troubleshoot a player who cannot join

Compare their game version with the server, refresh the code and check account multiplayer restrictions. If everybody fails, investigate server startup. If only one platform fails, investigate that client and its account first.

Mods requiring a matching client installation prevent consoles from being treated like moddable PC clients. Establish a working vanilla connection before considering mods. Crossplay also does not mean personal saves automatically synchronize across every platform.

What to check before renting

Look for an accessible crossplay setting, readable logs and world restoration. Persistent hosting helps friends play at different times, but moving providers will not repair a mismatched game version or incompatible mod.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need router port forwarding for rented hosting?
The provider manages the server network. Crossplay also uses a relay; follow the connection details and instructions supplied in its panel.
Can I retain an existing world?
Yes. Switching the backend does not require a new world. Back up first and verify that the same world name is selected after restarting.
