Migrate an ARK Ascended Save and Create a Cluster

Move an ASA world with profiles and tribes, then link maps through one cluster ID and shared transfer storage.

An ARK Ascended migration must move the world, player profiles and tribes as one consistent set. A cluster adds separate shared transfer storage between maps. Never rehearse on the only copy: clone the instance and keep the source off until validation finishes.

Prepare source and target

Put source and target on the same ASA build. Record internal map name, startup line, INI files, ordered mod list and versions. Block joins, force a save through administration, then fully stop the source.

Archive ShooterGame/Saved/, especially SavedArks/, which holds the map save, .arkprofile player profiles and .arktribe tribe files. Preserve configuration and mods too. Download the archive away from both machines and inspect it before copying.

Migrate an ASA world

1

Create a clean target

Install ASA, start once with no players on the same map, then stop. This creates expected paths and permissions without mixing old data immediately.
2

Align configuration and mods

Copy validated INI files and install identical mods in the same order. A world containing mod structures or creatures can fail or lose content if a mod is absent on first load.
3

Replace SavedArks while stopped

Archive the test world, then copy source map, profiles and tribes into the target server path. Do not copy them into a local client save directory.
4

Start privately

Read the log through full world load. Connect a known test account and check character, tribe, inventory, structures, creatures and map.
5

Test a second restart

Save, stop and restart. This proves the target can write profiles and that migration was not merely read-only.

Build a cluster across maps

Each instance needs its own map, world directory and unique game/peer/query/RCON ports. Instances instead share a writable transfer directory and the same cluster identifier.

Add to each startup line:

-clusterid=MY_CLUSTER -ClusterDirOverride="D:\ARK-Cluster"

The wiki also recommends reviewing -NoTransferFromFiltering and the seven GameUserSettings upload/download controls: survivors, items and dinos can each be allowed or blocked. Do not expose the cluster directory publicly; its data can affect the server economy.

Use a separate save directory per instance, for example through AltSaveDirectoryName, while noting that ASA retains a directory/map structure. Document which process owns each map.

Validate transfers and roll back safely

Cluster test

  • β€’Both servers show the same cluster ID and non-overlapping ports.
  • β€’ClusterDirOverride is identical and writable by both service accounts.
  • β€’Upload/download policies match community rules.
  • β€’A test survivor uploads, joins the other map and keeps permitted inventory and tribe.
  • β€’Returning to the first map works after a save.
  • β€’Backups separately protect every SavedArks folder and cluster directory.
  • β€’A procedure blocks transfers before maintenance.

On failure, stop both instances before restoring. Return map, profiles and tribes from the same timestamp, plus cluster data if a transfer was in progress. A partial rollback can duplicate or lose a survivor.

The ASA setup guide covers base ports. For modded worlds, use the ARK mod troubleshooting guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which files move with an ARK world?
Move the map save, every .arkprofile and .arktribe, then the same INI files and mods. Copying only the map can detach characters and tribes.
Can cluster maps reuse ports?
No. Every process needs unique game, peer, query and RCON ports. Only cluster ID and transfer directory are shared.
Why did a survivor disappear after transfer?
Check upload/download rules, cluster-directory permissions and partial rollback. Stop both maps before restoring transfer data.
