ARK Ascended Mods: Load Order, Updates and Startup Conflicts

Stabilise ASA CurseForge mods, control load order, update them and isolate a crash without damaging the world.

ARK: Survival Ascended distributes mods through CurseForge, not ARK: Survival Evolved's Steam Workshop. Order and IDs must match what the server actually loads, and removing content mods can delete their objects from the world. Back up before every change.

Build a reproducible inventory

For each mod, record name, CurseForge Project ID, version, supported platforms, position and dependencies. On a console community, keep only cross-platform releases. A PC-only list can block console players even when the server accepts crossplay.

Current ASA configuration supports:

-mods=ID_1,ID_2,ID_3

The wiki marks older approaches such as Steam Workshop and some ActiveMods uses as ASE-specific or obsolete for ASA. A provider manager may generate the argument; use one source of truth rather than two diverging lists.

Update without breaking the world

1

Back up the whole state

After an in-game save, stop and archive SavedArks, INI files, the mod manifest and downloads. Record date and build for each mod.
2

Read author notes

Look for migrations, new dependencies, changed IDs or incompatibility with the current ASA build. Do not assume every update is backward-compatible.
3

Update game, then mods

Update ASA and let the server's CurseForge mechanism fetch intended builds. Separate an interrupted download from a gameplay conflict.
4

Start with no players

Watch every ID download, mount and initialise. Wait for world load, then check logs for missing classes or assets.
5

Test existing content

On a copy, visit areas with mod structures and creatures, open inventories and restart. This catches silent loss before public access.

Isolate a mod that blocks startup

Start with the latest change and earliest useful log error, not the final cascade. Verify ID, completed download, platform and dependencies. If still unknown, clone the world and test half the list, then the other half; this batch search narrows the culprit quickly.

SymptomLikely causeSafe action
Download loopIncomplete cache or removed IDStop, verify ID and redownload that mod
Client incompatibleDifferent version or platformCompare client/server list and cross-platform status
Crash during world loadDependency or orderTest the copy with documented order and a reduced set
Items disappearedContent mod removedRestore backup and reinstall the mod before migration
Vanilla startsConflict confirmed in mod stackReintroduce batches while preserving logs and versions

Never permanently remove a structure, map or creature mod from the production world just to test startup. The first save without it may make loss permanent. Use an isolated copy and restore before the next test.

Validate the fix

Confirm two starts, one connection from each supported platform, loading of modded areas and a save/restore. Document final list, order and versions. The ARK mod install guide covers initial setup; the cluster guide covers multiple maps.

Frequently asked questions

Does ASA use Steam Workshop for mods?
No. ARK: Survival Ascended uses CurseForge and Project IDs. Workshop and -automanagedmods methods belong to Survival Evolved.
Can I reorder mods without a wipe?
Sometimes, but priority changes can affect class replacements and dependencies. Back up and test a world copy before keeping the new order.
How do I find the crashing mod?
Read the first error, verify dependencies and versions, then test list halves on a copy. Never save production with a content mod removed.
