How to Make a Counter-Strike 2 Server with SteamCMD
Install a dedicated CS2 server with SteamCMD, launch a map, configure networking and validate its GSLT before opening.
Counter-Strike 2 distributes its dedicated server through AppID 730. Validate a vanilla installation before adding maps or plugins so Valve/Steam, network and extension failures remain distinguishable.
Requirements and backup
Prepare a dedicated service account, SteamCMD, firewall/router access and a Steam GSLT stored as a secret. When replacing a server, stop it and back up game/csgo/cfg, map lists, game/csgo/addons, launch parameters and Workshop content. Keep a copy off the server before running validate.
Install and launch CS2
- Install SteamCMD in its own directory.
- Select the server directory and run
app_update 730 validateusing the login mode Valve currently accepts. - On Windows start
game\bin\win64\cs2.exe; on Linux use the CS2 binary undergame/bin/linuxsteamrt64/. - Add
-dedicated -console -usercon, followed by a port, map and mode. A baseline is-port 27015 +map de_dust2 +game_type 0 +game_mode 1. - Supply the GSLT through
+sv_setsteamaccount YOUR_TOKENfrom secret storage, never a published script.
The first goal is a stable console and a joinable vanilla match. Do not install Metamod or community maps yet.
Configuration and network
Put persistent settings in game/csgo/cfg/server.cfg. Start with hostname, a strong RCON password only if RCON is enabled, and rules required by the selected mode. Do not paste a large legacy CS:GO config: Source 2 changed or removed commands.
The common default game port is 27015. Allow the selected port over UDP and TCP as required by the functions you use, then forward it to the server's private address when needed. Test on the LAN first and from another network second. A TCP-only website does not validate game UDP traffic.
Validate before public launch
- Read the console through the load of
de_dust2. - Join from an updated client with
connect IP:27015. - Change map and confirm that
server.cfgexecutes. - Restart and recheck name, mode, map and GSLT.
- Test external access and public discovery separately.
If the process works but Steam authentication fails, check token, AppID and whether it was regenerated. After an update failure, run validate and retest vanilla before restoring plugins. Continue with the server.cfg and mapcycle guide.

Quick questions
Does CS2 have a separate dedicated-server AppID? Current Valve instructions distribute the server through AppID 730, so use the documented dedicated launch binary and flags.
Why start without plugins? A vanilla baseline proves that Steam files, GSLT, map and network work before third-party loaders affect startup.
What should survive a restart? Hostname, selected mode, official map launch, authenticated Steam identity and external connectivity should all be repeatable.
