CS2 server.cfg, Mapcycle and Game Mode Settings

Organize server.cfg, map rotation and game modes on a Counter-Strike 2 server with a testable, reversible workflow.

CS2 selects its game mode at launch and uses server.cfg for persistent rules. A large legacy CS:GO file may contain obsolete Source 1 commands; start small and add settings one at a time.

Back up and identify active files

Stop the server and copy game/csgo/cfg, map lists and launch parameters. server.cfg belongs under game/csgo/cfg/. Confirm in the console that it executes; a panel may generate the command and load another file through +exec.

Do not put the GSLT in this file. Give RCON a unique secret and restrict its network exposure when it is not required.

Select a game mode

CS2 combines game_type and game_mode. A common competitive setup uses +game_type 0 +game_mode 1, but verify current Valve values for the intended mode. Put them in the launch command before a compatible map.

Change one pair at a time, restart and inspect the active configuration. A command entered live may not survive the next map change.

Build a minimal server.cfg

Start with hostname, access and only required rules. Comment each block and version a secret-free copy. Test time limits, teams, warmup, spectators and bots in a private match before public launch.

For rotation, keep one valid map name per line in the file used by the mode, commonly mapcycle.txt, such as de_dust2. Workshop maps use a separate ID-based workflow; follow the CS2 Workshop map guide rather than inserting an item ID where a standard map name belongs.

Validate and troubleshoot

  1. Restart with the expected mode pair and an official map.
  2. Confirm that server.cfg executes without unknown commands.
  3. Join as a player, finish a map and observe rotation.
  4. Test passwords with another account without exposing RCON.
  5. Restart and verify every setting persists.

A missing map often stops rotation; return to an official map to separate content and configuration. A setting may be overwritten by mode files or execute too early. Read the console order instead of duplicating it.

The CS2 installation guide provides a vanilla baseline. Compare CS2 hosts by launch-line and CFG access.

Quick questions

Can a CS:GO server.cfg be reused unchanged? No. Treat it as a reference only and verify every command against CS2, because Source 2 changed the command set.

Why does rotation stop on one map? Confirm the map exists and supports the active mode, then restore an official map before troubleshooting Workshop content.

Where should the GSLT go? In protected launch-time secret storage, not in server.cfg, a screenshot or a repository.
