Install Workshop Maps on a Counter-Strike 2 Server

Add a CS2 Workshop map or collection, record its IDs, test downloads and retain a safe official-map fallback.

A CS2 Workshop map has a numeric Steam item ID that differs from its in-game name. The server can retrieve and load it, but clients must receive the same version. Always keep an official map as a fallback.

Choose a reliable map and back up

On the Workshop page, confirm that the item targets Counter-Strike 2, is maintained and documents any dependencies. Copy the numeric ID from its URL. For a collection, record the collection ID and expected items; an author can change a collection without changing your local configuration.

Stop the server and back up game/csgo/cfg, rotation files, launch parameters and any Workshop cache your panel allows you to export. Record the known-good official startup map.

Load a map or collection

  1. Update the CS2 server through SteamCMD.
  2. Start on an official map and open the server console.
  3. For one map, use the documented CS2 command host_workshop_map WORKSHOP_ID. For a collection, configure host_workshop_collection COLLECTION_ID using Valve's current syntax or the equivalent panel field.
  4. Let the download finish; do not restart while content is being written.
  5. Watch the console through map load and Steam authentication.

Hosting panels may request the ID in an interface instead of exposing the console command. Do not put a raw item ID in a mapcycle.txt designed for official map names.

Build a controlled rotation

Test each map separately before building a cycle. Confirm that it supports the intended mode, teams and spawns. Keep a versioned list of IDs, titles, authors and test dates. With a collection, approve individual items instead of assuming every future author addition is suitable.

Schedule a restart after Workshop updates. Ensure server and clients retrieve the same revision before an event. Keep a command that returns to de_dust2 or another known-good official map.

Validation and common failures

Join with a client that has not preloaded the map to test the real download. Complete a round, change maps, then restart. Watch for a bad ID, incomplete download, mode incompatibility or removed item.

If the server loops during load, put the official map back into the launch line, move an incomplete cache only after shutdown, and retry. If only some players fail, compare their Steam download before changing ports. Use the server.cfg and mapcycle guide for official rotations.

CS2 hosts differ in disk, Workshop downloading and parameter access.
