Minecraft Java and Bedrock server: Geyser and Floodgate
Connect Java and Bedrock players on Paper. Set up Geyser, Floodgate and the UDP port, then check console and mod compatibility.
Geyser lets Bedrock players connect to a Minecraft Java server. Floodgate authenticates their Bedrock accounts without requiring an additional Java account. The world still runs Java mechanics; this does not turn Paper into a native Bedrock server.
This walkthrough covers one Paper server that Java players can already join. A proxy network requires the project’s proxy-specific configuration, rather than copying these settings to every machine.
Check the devices and content first
List your friends’ devices, client versions and essential plugins. Some consoles do not provide a normal custom-server address field. Check Geyser’s instructions for the actual device before ordering hosting; the word Bedrock alone does not guarantee console access.
Java mods that require installation on the player’s computer cannot simply be translated by Geyser. This matters for Cobblemon and other modpacks. Resource packs and particular interactions can also behave differently. Test the features your group actually needs.
Install Geyser and Floodgate on Paper
- Back up the existing server and shut it down cleanly.
- Download compatible Geyser-Spigot and Floodgate-Spigot builds from their official projects.
- Put both JAR files in
plugins, then start the server once to generate configuration files. - Stop it. Open
plugins/Geyser-Spigot/config.yml, findauth-typeand set it tofloodgate. - Restart and inspect the console for successful plugin loading rather than assuming a running process means success.
Keep normal Java online authentication enabled for this direct Paper setup. Disabling online-mode is not part of these instructions. Floodgate’s key.pem is a private key; do not include it in files distributed to players.
Allocate the Bedrock UDP port
Geyser accepts Bedrock traffic over UDP, normally on 19132. Your provider may assign a different port. Enter the assigned value under bedrock in Geyser’s configuration and give that same value to your friends.
Opening TCP alone will not work. Do not reuse the UDP allocation for Simple Voice Chat or another service. A home server also needs the appropriate router forwarding; on rented hosting, check the allocation and filtering in the provider’s panel.
Test both editions before inviting everyone
Connect a Java account first, then a Bedrock account from another network. Check spawning, inventories, permissions and essential gameplay interactions. The console command geyser connectiontest ADDRESS PORT helps investigate reachability; replace both placeholders with the server’s public connection details.
If Java works but Bedrock fails, focus on UDP, supported versions and authentication. If one plugin rejects Bedrock players, inspect its name or permission rules before reinstalling the entire server. Keep the exact error message with the timestamp.
Compare the hosting requirements
You need a Paper installation, file access and an available UDP allocation. Our Bedrock pricing guide covers the budget question. For this project, confirm crossplay access and the ability to test your specific devices first.
