Simple Voice Chat for Minecraft: setup and troubleshooting

Install Simple Voice Chat on clients and the server, configure its UDP port and diagnose a disconnected voice chat icon.

Simple Voice Chat needs a server component, a client installation and a working UDP connection. Joining the Minecraft world does not establish that the audio service is reachable; these are separate connections.

This guide covers a single server. For Velocity or another proxy, also follow the project’s proxy instructions rather than assigning the same network role to multiple machines.

Match the files to each installation

On Paper, put the server plugin in plugins. On Fabric, Forge or NeoForge, use the mod matching the loader and game version. Every player also needs the client version appropriate for their installation.

A Paper JAR does not belong in a Fabric mods folder. See our mods and plugins guide for the distinction. A player without the client component may join the world, but cannot use its voice features.

Set the allocated audio port

Back up and stop the server before installation. Start it once, then find voicechat-server.properties under plugins/voicechat on Paper or config/voicechat on mod loaders. Stop it again before editing.

The port setting controls audio traffic. Its default is 24454 over UDP; replace it with the provider’s available allocation. Use the following only if that port has actually been assigned:

port=24454

Allow that UDP port through the relevant network layers and restart. Geyser and Query can also use UDP, so avoid allocation conflicts. Do not change voice_host at random to work around a closed port.

Test the microphone and connection separately

On each client, open the mod’s menu, choose the input and output devices, and check push-to-talk or voice activation. Confirm microphone permission in the operating system as well.

With appropriate permissions, run /voicechat test PLAYERNAME. Test two players standing nearby in the world, including a connection from another network. A generic TCP port checker cannot verify this UDP service.

Investigate a disconnected icon

If everyone is disconnected, inspect the configured port, allocation, protocol and plugin startup. If only one player fails, compare their mod version, network and devices with a working client.

When connected without audible speech, check mute state, volume, distance, voice group and activation key. Keep the test’s actual result for support instead of reinstalling every client.

Confirm what the hosting plan allows

Ask whether the plan supports the chosen plugin or loader, an additional UDP allocation and access to its settings. Plugin support does not automatically mean all mod loaders are permitted. Confirm the exact setup before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Do players need a client mod with a Paper server?
Yes. Paper uses the server plugin, while players still need the appropriate client component to use voice chat.
Can I share Geyser’s port?
Avoid assigning the same UDP allocation to both services. Request separate ports and configure them independently.
Must I use 24454?
No. It is the default. Use the UDP allocation available on your actual plan.

Continue with: avoid conflicts with Geyser, troubleshoot the game connection.
