Configure Unturned Commands.dat and Config.json
Edit Commands.dat while the server is stopped, and check whether the world still reads Config.json or already uses Config.txt.
Most Unturned settings are ignored while the process is running. Commands.dat is the startup file. Config.json is the old gameplay file. Servers created after 3.25.8.0 use Config.txt instead.
Install and the login token are in the setup guide. This page starts once Servers/<ServerID>/ already exists.
Which file is live
Stop with Shutdown. Copy the ServerID folder first. A word processor that swaps quotation marks will break Commands.dat the same way a missing comma used to break JSON.
| File | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Servers/<ServerID>/Server/Commands.dat | Startup commands, one per line. Lines starting with // are comments. |
| Servers/<ServerID>/Config.txt | Gameplay, listing and advanced options on a current server. An empty value means the default. |
| Config_<Difficulty>Difficulty.txt | Written when an old Config.json is converted. Example: Config_NormalDifficulty.txt. |
| WorkshopDownloadConfig.json | Workshop file IDs. Not the difficulty file. |
The simple-setup path in the docs is U3DS/Servers/Default/. Your ServerID replaces Default when the script says +InternetServer/SomeOtherName.
What the official Commands.dat sample actually sets
One command per line. The studio sample includes:
Namefor the server list;Map PEI, or another official map: Washington, Yukon, Russia, Germany;MaxPlayers 24as their example, not as a performance claim;Ownerplus the SteamID64 that receives admin rights;Cheatsif admins should run commands such asGive;Passwordto require a join password;PvEto disable player-versus-player combat;Perspective Both, orFirst,Third,Vehicle;Port 27015when you forward. The next port, 27016, is used as well.
GSLT can live in this file. You do not also need Login_Token unless you are choosing that location instead. One of the two is required for an Internet server.
Save, Shutdown and Help run while the server is up. In chat, an admin prefixes them with @ or /. Admin rights come from Owner, the runtime Admin command, or Adminlist.dat. Help lists commands or describes one.
Leave Config.json behind unless you mean to
From 3.25.8.0, options live in Config.txt, for example Servers/Default/Config.txt. Older servers still have Config.json, which stored Easy, Normal and Hard together. On startup the server converts it into a text file for the active difficulty. Only values that differ from the default are copied, because an empty value in the new file means "use the default".
You can keep the JSON with -UseLegacyJsonGameplayConfig. The studio's reasons not to: level overrides beat default values, all three difficulties share one file, a forgotten comma stops the load, and comments are impossible. The text format comments every option and keeps comments you add.
Difficulty in Commands.dat selects Easy or Hard. Without it, the server uses the Normal file.
-LogGameplayConfig prints which options are overridden. -NoLevelConfigOverrides stops the map from replacing values you left empty. -GameplayConfigFile="SpecialEventConfig.txt" loads another file in the ServerID folder, or an absolute path.
A loot change in the wrong difficulty file looks like the server ignored you. That is not a Commands.dat failure.
Check the world you already have
Start and wait for Loading level: 100%. Confirm name, map, player cap and password with an account that is not an admin. If Cheats is on, try one documented command, then remove the flag on a public server. The docs describe it as access to cheat commands.
If the process will not start, restore the copied Commands.dat and config file, then change one group of settings. Workshop mods and OpenMod are separate: mods guide. Game offers: Unturned comparison.
Questions
I still have Config.json. Should I rewrite it by hand?
Why did loot chance stay the same?
Where is the admin password?
Sources: Setting up a Server, Server Configuration, official gameplay config wiki. The wiki still describes Config.json for gameplay. The newer studio docs describe the conversion to Config.txt.
