How to Make a Vintage Story Server: Worlds, Ports and Admin Access

Set up a Vintage Story dedicated server, preserve your world and configure player access.

A Vintage Story dedicated server keeps the world available when its owner is offline. Separate the game files from the data directory during setup: the latter contains configuration, the world and mods you need to protect.

Start the server

  1. Get server files from the source linked in the Vintage Story documentation, then install prerequisites for your operating system.
  2. Start the server with an explicit data directory. For .NET installations, the documentation describes dotnet VintagestoryServer.dll --dataPath path/to/data. Check instructions for your installed version before copying an older command.
  3. After first launch, stop the server and inspect serverconfig.json. The Saves directory holds .vcdbs worlds. To import an existing world, copy its save while the server is stopped and set SaveFileLocation to the file's name.
  4. Open the configured port for outside connections. Recent documentation uses 42420 on TCP and UDP. At home, forward the port on your router too; with a host, check the assigned port.

Test from Multiplayer > Add new server. A private address works on a local network, while a remote friend needs the machine's public address or hostname.

Protect the world and prepare for mods

Set admin permissions using the console or documented commands, then decide whether to allow everyone, require a password or restrict the player list. Back up both the .vcdbs file and serverconfig.json before adding mods or changing game versions.

Mod installation and player downloads are covered in the Vintage Story server mod guide. If you would rather avoid maintaining the machine and network, review Vintage Story hosting offers, checking file and backup access.

Keep your Vintage Story world available

Compare hosts while checking backups, mods and access to the data directory.
