Minecraft Sulfur Caves: How to Find Cinnabar and Sulfur (26.2)

How to find Sulfur Caves in Minecraft 26.2: surface Sulfur Springs, the /locate command, depth range, and what Cinnabar and Sulfur blocks are for.

Minecraft 26.2 ("Chaos Cubed") added a new underground biome: Sulfur Caves, built from yellow sulfur blocks and red cinnabar blocks, with pools of water that visibly let off gas and bursts of steam. Here's how to find one, and what's actually down there.

How to find Sulfur Caves

Three ways to find one

  • Look for a Sulfur Spring on the surface: a single pool with a geyser, ringed by sulfur, cinnabar and stone blocks — almost every Sulfur Caves biome has one marking it from above.
  • Use the locate command: type /locate biome sulfur_caves in chat (cheats must be enabled) to get the coordinates of the nearest one.
  • Mine between Y-16 and Y-48: Sulfur Caves generate at roughly the same depth as lush caves and dripstone caves, though they're smaller and more fragmented, so you may tunnel past the edge of one without noticing.

Where they generate

Sulfur Caves show up more often under flatland terrain near swamps and deserts, and can generate below most terrain (excluding oceans and high mountains).

What Cinnabar and Sulfur blocks are for

Both are primarily decorative/building blocks native to this biome — their main draw is the palette itself (a warm red-and-yellow contrast that's become popular for builds) plus being the terrain that hosts the biome's exclusive mob, the Sulfur Cube.

Running a server with the 26.2 update

If you're running a Minecraft server for your world, updating to 26.2 means new chunks generate with Sulfur Caves included, but your existing explored terrain won't retroactively grow them — you'll need to explore new chunks to find one. Before updating, check our Minecraft RAM guide if you haven't sized your server in a while, since new biomes and mobs add slightly to world generation load.
